I know what you mean. I ordered 2 Competition Pro joypads - and received 2
Commodore CD32 pads. I was really mad. I asked about it, and why we didn't get a
discount due to the fact that the CD32 pads were cheaper - and got some excuse
about the Competition Pro's not being available etc.

Anyway - the D-pads are indeed terrible. To quote Cartman, "They suck arse".
On the inside they have these tiny little plastic 'wings' that stick out and
"secure" it into position by locking into a gap in the main casing around the
button.
Did I mention that those little plastic wings are incredibly small and weak?
Well, they broke off after a week or two of Goal, Brian the Lion, Zool2 and
Chaos Engine. Then with them gone, the D-pads started to swivel around under our
thumbs.
Nothing quite beats pushing a direction and feeling the pad rotate under your
thumb and watching your sprite going in the wrong direction.
I spent many hours opening the cases and supergluing bits of sprue cut from my
modelling kits to replace those damned wings.

The only game I felt it was worth it for was Guardian. Otherwise it was play
with keyboard controls or with my Speedking.
